Joe Morrissey Banned from Henrico Jails

Joe Morrissey

by Jeanine Martin

Last weekend Senator Joe Morrissey (D-Richmond) was banned from two Henrico County jails when he brought his three young children to Regional Jail West and refused to supervise them. His ban lasts for 90 days.

Morrissey came to the jail to introduce one of his incarcerated constituents to an attorney who would represent him. He left his 3 young children in the lobby of the jail with crayons and paper on which to color. Sheriffs at the jail informed the senator that rules require all children in the jail be supervised by an adult.

Twice the sheriffs had to ask Mr. Morrissey to settle down his children. After the second time, he was informed that all children in the jail must be supervised by an adult at all times. Morrissey again refused.

From the Richmond Times-Dispatch:

Despite our staff’s efforts, Mr. Morrissey refused repeated requests to comply and eventually became verbally abusive, made threatening remarks and acted in an aggressive manner to a lieutenant, (Henrico Sheriff) Gregory said. Due to his actions, Mr. Morrissey’s privileges to visit Henrico’s Jail West and Jail East facilities will be suspended for 90 days.
