Youngkin’s No-Lose Proposition

Governor Glenn Youngkin wants to eliminate sanctuary cities in Virginia. He faces tough opposition from Democrats in the General Assembly, but I see the issue as a political winner no matter what the legislative outcome.

The Governor announced yesterday that he plans to introduce a budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year that would withhold police and jail funding from localities that refuse to cooperate with Immigration and Customs Enforcement authorities seeking to detain illegal immigrants already in local custody.

Dozens of Virginia localities have adopted policies that limit cooperation with federal immigration authorities to varying degrees. With the term “sanctuary studies” in bad odor, some have rebranded their policies as “building trust” with immigrant communities for purposes of combating crime. But the practical effect is the same.

If Democrats want to take the pro-criminal side of the immigration debate, then they’re committing electoral suicide. Do they really want to be painted as defending the rights of violent Salvadoran MS-13 gang members like Melvin Canales Saldana — sentenced to life in prison for involvement in multiple murders — to stay in the U.S.?

It’s one thing to feel compassion for “dreamers” who grew up in Virginia and have lost any connection with their country of origin. (I, for one, do.) Likewise, it’s possible to sympathize with illegal immigrants have lived in the country for years, worked hard for a living, paid taxes, and stayed out of trouble with the law. It’s a leap of Olympic proportions to defend those who not only entered the country illegally but continued breaking the law when they got here.

It is often said that illegal aliens are less likely to commit crimes than native-born Americans. That may or may not be true. But so what if it is? Some illegals do commit crimes, and they have no right to stay in the country.

According to a recent CBS/YouGov poll, 57% of Americans support deporting all undocumented residents. Without a doubt, a higher percentage would support deporting undocumented criminals. I would wager that immigrant communities support the deportation of criminals at an even higher rate than the general public because criminal foreigners tend to prey on members of their own communities. (Immigrants are more vulnerable to such criminal behavior than the educated white elites who are most likely to support “progressive” approaches to crime and immigration.)

“Several localities and several jails in Virginia have implemented sanctuary policies in recent years … and as a direct result of these reckless and flagrant, irresponsible policies, violent criminals are allowed back into our communities,” the Governor said at an afternoon news conference, reports The Washington Post.

If Youngkin succeeds in pushing his proposal through the General Assembly in the 2025 session, he racks up a big political win. If he fails, he sets up Lieutenant Governor Winsome Earle-Sears for her gubernatorial run later in the year.

“Any local elected official who instructs law enforcement to defy efforts to keep Virginians safe abandons their duty and breaks the trust of the people they swore to protect,” said Earle-Sears, a legal Jamaican immigrant.

By contrast, noted the WaPo, “Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D-Virginia), who is likely to face Earle-Sears in the governor’s race, did not immediately respond to a request for comment.”

Spanberger knows this is a no-win proposition for her.

Senate Majority Leader Scott A. Surovell, D-Fairfax — who is not running for statewide office — was less reticent.

“What [Youngkin] will do, by trying to inflame the public on this issue, is disincentivize crime victims and cooperating witnesses from participating in investigations to solve actual violent crime,” he said.

I suspect that Surovell reflects the vibe of Virginia’s Democratic Party.

Democrats are walking back their defund-the-police rhetoric, but they’re still viewed as squishy on crime. They’re walking back their open-borders rhetoric, but they’re still viewed as squishy on illegal immigration. Defending non-cooperation with ICE, where the crime and immigration issues intersect, is madness.

A year ago, Youngkin campaigned on getting a stricter abortion bill through the General Assembly. It looks like he’s learned his lesson. I don’t see how he can lose this one.

Why would you wish to blatantly lie about this issue? I know Republicans are openly cynical in their political rhetoric but really, you donโ€™t care whatsoever about your own honor and reputation? Power at all costs? I think Democrats will meet you on that battle front.

I dunno, JAB, how you rank winner/loser statuses. By supporting POTUS 45/47, Youngkin has nothing to lose in a bid for a role in the new administration with a record of compliance regarding sanctuary cities.

"In fact, during his presidency, in 2017, Trump tried this. Almost immediately after stepping into office, he issued an executive order stating that "sanctuary jurisdictions" that refused to comply with immigration enforcement measures would not be eligible to receive federal grants."

"It is often said that illegal aliens are less likely to commit crimes than native-born Americans."

    A classic leftist non-sequitur.

An ILLEGAL alien is commiting a crime by being in the country.

Whether the illegal aliens commit more crimes (beyond being in the country illegally) than legal aliens or native born Americans is an open question since the propensity to report crime is lower among illegal aliens.

Ultimately, this will be a loser issue for the GOP as people with personal connection to immigrants and their families see how it plays out.

  5. The easiest solution — take some of the anti-personnel mines we're sending to Ukraine and sprinkle them along the Rio Grande…… that'll stop em.
If they're good enough to protect the sanctity of the Ukrainian border – they're good enough for ours.

Local law enforcement voice concerns about cooperating with federal law enforcement in immigration matters as such compromises cooperation by members of those communities with law enforcement. During my lifetime, NYC hosted tightly knit criminal enterprises of Jewish, Italian, and Irish ethnics. While crime was well organized, deportation was nonexistent. Never contemplated as the ethnic groups largely relinquished crime as an occupation.

I read that Ca. critics of Biden/Harris loose borders policy say the policy was because Blue states like Ca. are hoping to retain live bodies for Census to keep their numbers of elected reps, in the wake of loss of population due to blue state high tax policies etc.

What's the difference between an elected official standing in front of a school, refusing to follow federal law by allowing black students to attend and not letting local government employees to cooperate with the federal government to enforce the law and an elected official standing in front of a jail, refusing to follow federal immigration law and not letting local government employees to cooperate with the federal government to enforce the law?

FWIW, and to the point, with 100s of 1000s of federal laws and regulations that can lead to criminal prosecution (thatโ€™s an estimate, BTW, since efforts to count them have all failed), it has been postulated that every American violates some federal law/regulation daily.

It will depend on how Youngkin's budget amendment is worded. For example, does an immigrant have to be convicted of a crime before a sheriff or jail superintendent has to notify ICE? And how is this requirement going to be enforced? Will it be based on reports from ICE? Will localities have the ability to appeal any ICE report? For example, one of the examples Youngkin use is that of a immigrant accused of rape that Fairfax released. The county claims that ICE did not issue a detainer. Speaking of detainer requests from ICE, even the Virginia Republican Attorney General says they have no legal standing. What about the case in which an undocumented immigrant is convicted of a misdemeanor but the court does not sentence him to any jail time? There is not any time to notify ICE. Is the requirement going to apply to any undocumented immigrant regardless of the nature of the crime or just to the violent ones that everyone agrees should be deported?

Simply do what President Lincoln did. Raise an army and invade those rebelling sanctuary cities. The presidential precedent has been established.

democRATS always scream "no one is above the law" when it comes to using lawfare against their political opponents and then proceed to subvert, distort and break the law in carrying out their lawfare. But when it comes to their schemes such as illegal immigration in which they think they will gain political dividends going forward they have absolutely no problem in disregarding the law and justifying to themselves BEING "above the law."

Guess what democRATS you just lost in resounding fashion a major historical election as the American people can see clearly you are hypocrites and that includes minority voting blocs you have acted against in your lawless ways. The day after the election I joyfully wore my MAGA hat in doing errands and was amazed at the approving looks and thumbs up I received especially from Latino voters!

But go on right ahead and continue your lawless and hypocritical ways as we MAGA continue to sweep elections across the nation. ICYMI the American people, including the minority blocs you obviously do not really care about, now have their eyes wide open and are fed up with your nonsense!
