Virginia’s Fertility Rate — Nothing to Write Home About

Map source: National Center for Health Statistics

Following up on yesterday’s post showing the variation in birth rates by Virginia locality… the National Center for Health Statistics map above provides a breakdown of fertility rates by state. Virginia falls in the middle of the pack (but bottom half) with a fertility rate for women aged 15–44 with 55.3 births per 1,000. It ranks 29th in the country. Meh.

University of Virginia sociologist Brad Wilcox (a rare conservative at UVA) puts his spin on the data in this article published by the Institute for Family Studies (a rare conservative nonprofit headquartered in Charlottesville).

The 10 states with the highest birth rates are red while the 10 states with the lowest birth rates are blue. The birth rate for deep-red South Dakota is 2.01 births per woman. The birth rate for deep-blue Vermont is 1.3.

Wilcox argues that left-of-center policies to encourage fertility — government incentives and subsidies — don’t work very well. Families with children are moving out of blue states into red states. What matters more, he suggests, are job opportunities, cost of living (especially housing) and family-friendly culture.

“Culturally, red states are more likely to prioritize marriage and family life, offer parents more educational choices and show a greater commitment to law and order, which are plusses to many family minded Americans,” Wilcox theorizes.

But the differences in culture actually go deeper.

Writes Wilcox:

The “new” commitments to education and career and expressive individualism —what we call the “Midas Mindset” found in many young men and women today — are more likely to dominate blue states. This mindset encourages young adults to delay or forego forming families and pushes blue states in the direction of the “no family” model. By contrast, many red states, especially ones where religious faith is strong (like Utah), prioritize the value of getting married and focusing on your family rather than putting most of your eggs in the baskets of work and self. Evidence suggests that religious fathers and husbands — more likely to be found in red states — prioritize marriage and family life, including housework, in ways that make family life more appealing to the women in their lives.

In regional sub-cultures that treat family and children as a natural and integral part of life, families are likely to have more children. In regional sub-cultures where children are seen as impediments to career and personal development and more akin to luxury goods, families will have fewer children and have them later in life.

Sharing data and discussing the implications is not "obsessing". It is having a conversation.

Maybe lay off the con-sauce and do your own research with legitimate sources? Conservatives are currently obsessed with forcing women to birth more children, whether they want to or not, at mortal risk to themselves (b/c maternity care deserts and abortion laws). The Economist has been covering this for over a decade. It's observations about what has occurred match Dr. Wilcox. It's conclusions as to cause/solutions do not. If you're new to this issue, or the promotion of the Ponzi scheme framework (force more births to care for old people), start there.

I am guessing you get to determine whether a source is legitimate? Being anonymous, are you a legit source? I tend to think not.

Both Florida republicans and Texas republicans have informed the DOJ that federal election monitors are barred from going inside their state polling places. Seems kind of importantโ€ฆ but sure letโ€™s talk about fertility ratesโ€ฆ

Economists know the vast majority of the decline is the lack of births to women and girls under 20. You know, the ones who make the rational choice to not rely on a man for income, get medication to prevent conception, become self-supporting/reliant and stable, before having kidsโ€ฆin other wordsโ€ฆRESPONSIBLE. If red statesโ€™ goal is to create a permanent underclass of brown children (and I believe it is), their polices are a spectacular success! Bonus, they can blame the women and kids for their high needs and criminally negligent parenting too. Of course women and children are now routinely dying on their watch but who cares about that kind of โ€˜protectionโ€™? โ€œWhether the women want it or notโ€, republicans are serving it up, turning economic vitality into a giant Ponzi scheme with women and girls involuntarily on their backs and in the ground. Good luck with that. Weโ€™re not going back. https://www.economist.com/graphic-detail/2024/02/05/some-good-news-about-americas-fertility-problem

Are you not grateful your parents chose not to abort you? Just a simple question.

      1. Not Today Avatar

My mother had two abortions in her lifetime, once as a teen before my parents met and married, and once as a married woman. I wouldnโ€™t be here if sheโ€™d made other choices and, in any case, I wouldnโ€™t know. Iโ€™m glad she had the option to do what was best for her and my dad.

More accurately if you are leftwing as expressed in offspring they could have been heterozygous leftwing. When heterozygous genes are paired it often translates into birth defects or autosomal disorders.

Nevertheless, I spoke a couple years ago with my UVA biochemistry professor who related that in the field of biology the bulk of present day advances has been in the area of epigenetics, but I am not aware of any research tying it to political outlook. That is most likely a result of environmental damage such as being indoctrinated at leftwing universities.

The foregoing article refers to Brad Wilcox who has done research showing how for instance conservative families are remarkably happier than leftwing families. Multiple studies have elucidated how aberrant behaviors such as gender dysphoria are overwhelmingly concentrated in leftwing families. I would add other characteristics such as advocating for the killing of their own children even at birth. As you well know the democrat party has for years advocated for the killing of babies. And strangely Biden, the face of the democrat party, has shifted from sniffing and inappropriate touching of women and girls, to now as recently seen at a White House halloween party to biting babies. How does it make sense to vote for people like that?

At the very least are you not happy your conservative parents chose not to abort you? Sadly, many babies are conceived by democrat parents who obviously have a predilection to kill their own progeny. And they do on a regular basis.

And that very well could eventually be tied back to a genetic basis which the ultimate effect of is to cause self extinction.

I often hear my democrat friends bring up the subject of their self-loathing which again speaks to a form of mental disease. And then I attended Larry Sabato's 50th celebration in which former Democrat Representative from Maryland voiced her own observation as to democrats being "glass half full, fear minded, bedwetters." Not exactly the kind of people I would want to emulate or be associated with.

But I do enjoy observing and interacting with leftwing types on this blog and to note how what I have just detailed is expressed in their political positions. Rather pathetic to say the least.

The question begs to be asked as to why you are attracted to and vote with that side when apparently you were raised by more healthy minded conservative parents? If you have children maybe accessing Mr. Wilcox's research could help you in building a better more healthy future for them. Your parents obviously tried and did their best for you.

    1. Not Today Avatar

If conservatives are, in fact, happier at home (which I doubt) they wouldnโ€™t have to force people into their patriarchal mold because people would freely choose it for themselves. In reality, divorce rates, DV, and other measures of social dysfunction are higher. https://www.journals.uchicago.edu/doi/10.1086/674703#:~:text=In%20the%20aggregate%2C%20states%20with,states%E2%80%9D%20because%20of%20their%20Democratic

Guess you missed JABโ€™s last piece where he โ€œreportedโ€ that it is Red sections of the state that have the lowest fertility ratesโ€ฆ ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™‚๏ธ

    1. Not Today Avatar

โ€˜Redโ€™, read economically depressed communities, have more residents that are more sensitive to economic conditions like poverty. Fertility in blue, read high income households, is less elastic. Residents can and do have children when they want, not only when they can afford them. DUH. How do you get around that? Take away poor peopleโ€™s choices, keep them ignorant, and force them to birth kids anyway.

      1. Eric the half a troll Avatar
        Eric the half a troll

Well, also, young people are getting educated and leaving those rural areas – and the political mindset that goes with them. Old Conservatives have fewer kids than young Liberals. That is a pretty clear trend in the US today.

And apparently you missed the whole article or more likely decided in your own mind to add your own version, which ICYMI is not in the article the rest of us are reading.

Hmm, professor Wilcox might want to reevaluate his thesis. Turns out when women are empowered to make more money than their partners, men get in their feelings and stop helping out. In other words, the amount of help they provide is proportional to the level of suppression/oppression women and girls in their states are subjected to. https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2016/10/the-only-chore-men-will-do-is-cook/505067/

Do you ever wonder what it would have been like to enjoy the company of your two siblings? I am actually right now visiting my daughter's family and watching their one and 3 year old daughters happily enjoy each other. I think of you and wonder what you could have enjoyed were it not for the choices made. My two granddaughters are now playing at their play kitchen happily "cooking" breakfast for me.

    1. Not Today Avatar

lol. No. I never wondered that. I have five brothers and sisters and umpteen cousins. Do you ever wonder whether your assumptions about families and choice are just plain wrong?

  11. Clarity77 Avatar

    Are you sure?

As to "assumptions about families and choice" they are based in Professor Wilcox's data and facts. Do you have data and facts to disprove his research?

In the absence of which could it be that you are wrong?

  13. Clarity77 Avatar

As to your "doubts" it might benefit you in attempting to debate the issue at hand if you accessed Professor Wilcox's data which is posted for your benefit on his website.

    1. Not Today Avatar

Iโ€™m not sure why I should bother as you seem to have done so and repeatedly posted easily disproved factoids on that basis . The only thing he seems to have successfully deduced is that more children are being born in red states. It might behoove you to expand your range of thought beyond a single man's 'research'. There's a big old world out there and plenty of women who will actually tell you what's what if you're willing to listen. It's unfortunate that our foremothers shielded the male psyche from so much of the hard stuff. The world needs more listeners.

You are entitled to your opinion but not to the facts.

If that does not resonate, then try this. Facts matter more than your opinion.

        CITE SOME.

        1. Clarity77 Avatar

I did refer you to Professor Wilcox's website to get all the data and research you asked for but apparently you are blinded by your anger.

Anger is not a healthy emotion and you can learn in basic psychology courses that it is a cover up emotion used as a defense against the truth the angry one is trying to hide. Which is predominantly guilt. There is a simple well known solution to a healthier way to manage guilt based anger but especially on the left it is impossible to access as it requires an intimate knowing of God which cannot happen if you do not believe in the existence of God.

And that is the core reason why conservative families are happier as they know and believe in God in much higher numbers than the left which is as a consequence deranged, lost and out angrily yelling mindlessly at the wind.

    โ€œHave you read them?โ€

    Rhetoricalโ€ฆ rightโ€ฆ?

    1. Not Today Avatar

The reality is that most men have no flipping clue which women and girls have had abortions or exercised various family planning options. They see the finished, sometimes glossy, pictures of families and assume they know how folks got there. They don't.

They also don't know the half of what it takes/has taken to maintain any of it…the household grind (cleaning, meal prep, daycare, dr./dentist appts., school course planning, homework, shoe sizes, birthday parties, formal dance prep/activities, gyn care challenges/waits, risk of abuse/maltreatment) and on it goes. It's not their fault that they're ignorant. It's a choice, however, to remain so.

  16. Clarity77 Avatar

Ah Naive, now we are making progress.

My simple question did bother you. And you would like to silence my voice.

Am I getting too close to the truth for you to handle?

Can you tell us what you are trying to hide?

Could it have something to do with guilt?

    1. Not Today Avatar

Sir, if anything, you should feel guilty for your intrusive questions (which backfired) and continued insistence that conservative households=better families when nothing of the kind is in evidence. Your singular source is/has been contradicted at every turn and yet you've not an ounce of humility or regret.

  17. Clarity77 Avatar

It's quite clear the "factoids" you prefer are selected to fit your narrow and uninspiring victimology narrative. If your intent is to add clarity to the overall discussion it might help your case if you toned down the emotion and focused on a more balanced approach with a rational perspective inclusive and that would address facts that may not fit your narrative.

Your summary dismissal of Professor Wilcox's carefully researched data and conclusions says more about you than it does about his work. With such an evident close minded attitude why bother even reading what you would offer.

Consider how you come across as one who wants to enforce what to think rather than encouraging how to think. I would suggest you go outside and yell at the wind. You might feel better.

  18. Not Today Avatar

If you're unemotional about the deaths and risks to women in America right now…shame on you. DO BETTER. Your grandkids and daughter/daughter-in-law deserve better. Professor Wilcox's speculation (so says JAB) is unsupported by fact. Maybe consider how your unwillingness to learn and grow reads to women and girls? You shouldn't need encouragement/ego-stroking to independently read and learn.

I did have a lovely walk with one of two minors in my care today. If you have access to one, I highly recommend, 10/10. Be sure to look the female one (if available) in the eye and tell her/her mother that you know what's best for her and plan to vote accordingly! https://www.teenvogue.com/story/gen-z-trump-access-hollywood-tape-tiktok

Why discuss/identify/control the consequences of indiscriminately spread male seed when it's so much easier (for men) to control the wombs of women and girls. Prepubescent? No problem, just marry 'em and the sex magically becomes legal. Men can install offspring in wombs with/without consent and keep women and girls under their thumb as long as they like according to US law. Plank<—own eye. START THERE, Jim. https://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/voices/2019/06/19/abortion-laws-bans-rape-parental-rights-column/1432450001/

  23. Clarity77 Avatar

Nice try but not sticking in the least but on the contrary when I mentioned the word guilt you were triggered. Bingo!

Your evident anger confirms. And BTW, my question was not even directed at you but you picked up on it while as to Naive you will notice runs away.

And that is what democrats have done now for ages in manipulating people into making decisions they later regret and they are then left with the anger associated with the guilt. This is their basic game as to dividing people over race, abortion, women's rights, gender issues, on and on ad infinitum. And then off they go to work on others while leaving you holding the bag. Especially the anger bag which sadly results in a myriad of unhealthy behaviors. There is a simple antidote to their game but they especially do not want you to ever access that.

  24. Not Today Avatar

Not the angry black woman trope! LOL. My surprised face ———>

    1. Clarity77 Avatar

If that is how you characterize yourself, how is it working as to your overall health, physical and mental, the health of your personal relationships and connections as well as your peace of mind?

  25. Not Today Avatar

It’s SUPER easy to be/report ‘happiness’ when you move through life wearing blinders and avoiding any/all unpleasant and contradictory information.

  26. Maybe the reason that blue states have lower birth rates is that women in blue states are not held in servitude to their husbands and they have a say in how many kids they will have.

I was born and reared in rural south Mississippi and go home for the occasional funeral. I worked for six years in the WV coalfields — WV south of 64. The attitudes of men toward women and the attitudes of women toward themselves in both places are like something out of the Middle Ages or the Old Testament — no one is buying and selling wives but it's close.

The attitudes toward women and the attitude of women toward themselves in the blue states where I have lived are the polar opposite, with respect flowing both ways.
