The beauty of “social and emotional learning” is that it is impossible to quantify and impossible to measure, therefore, impossible to demonstrate that it is meaningless mumbo jumbo and its practitioners are total frauds.

Regarding “meaningless mumbo jumbo,” that’s the exact point. The copy scans as feel-good drivel to laypersons, but reads as “fund us! consult with us!” to institutions of higher learning.
“Can you imagine how many committee meetings were required to close on that statement? How many feelings were bruised over every comma?”
Perhaps that’s the case, but with donors like these I bet they just tapped the Gates Foundation/CZI’s in-house PR shop. Or they billed a marketing firm.

If you’re into UK public policy you might be familiar with the perfidious QUANGO — basically, the public-private partnership racket to which matters of parish, council, and state have been devolved over the past few decades. They are institutionalized advocacy organizations and management consultancies divorced from electoral politics, yet exercise incredible influence over policymaking and implementation.
We see the exact same dynamic here in the US, but lack the language to easily describe what these groups are and what power they wield. ProPublica has done some interesting reporting on energy sector trade groups and cleantech advocates, but for obvious political reasons they don’t apply the same scrutiny to CASEL, healthcare associations, and the like.
Snyder, Youngkin…the right in Virginia obviously has money to throw around. A long-term strategy to defeat progressives at the policy level needs a good understanding of what exactly conservatives are up against, and there’s no better way to obtain said understanding than open-source investigative reporting. Fund some!

I abhor the sign on the young lady’s door. However, that word, unfortunately, has become part of daily language. You walk down the streets of Richmond and you hear it constantly. It is part of everyday conversation in most movies. It is now showing up in serious magazines, such as the New Yorker. Mr. Sherlock complains that President Ryan “did nothing”. What was he supposed to do? After all, there is a First Amendment that is applicable to college students. He and the Board did the only thing they could do: they banned all signs on the doors, except for a small “message board”. This is a case of the whole community (other Lawn residents) suffering because of the stupidity or insensitivity of one.
As for SEL, what specifically in that statement do you disagree with?

And they’ll use the 2nd to do it, because everyone knows the 2nd comes 1st for them.
BTW, UVa has a law school and very smart pre-law seniors, one of which will realize that they will jump start their careers with a suit against the school that makes it to SCOTUS, so watch for another such sign within the next year. The ACLU is watching.

A process is a series of actions or steps taken in order to achieve a particular end.
The SEL “process” is defined by CASEL as:
“There are four key elements that guide SEL implementation and sustainability, with different activities at each level:”
1. “Build foundational support and plan by establishing a collective vision and plan for SEL, and ensuring aligned resources and ongoing commitment.”
2. “Strengthen adult SEL competencies and capacity by cultivating a trusting community that enhances adults’ professional, social, emotional, and cultural competencies and their capacity to promote SEL for students.”
3. “Promote SEL for students by developing a coordinated approach across classrooms, schools, homes, and communities that ensures consistent, culturally responsive, and developmentally appropriate opportunities for all students to enhance and apply social and emotional competencies to daily tasks and challenges.”
4. “Reflect on data for continuous improvement by establishing an ongoing process to collect and use implementation and outcome data to inform decisions and drive improvements.”
Dick, if you can build a program out of that, you are truly a better man than I. There is no intention on the part of the left to define it, so absolutely anything will fit if you “feel” it strongly enough.
The “reflect on data” part means the advocates are winging it, and if 100,000 students fall through the voluminous cracks, they will try to adjust.
And there are never any metrics, just feelings. Never objectively measure anything, and nothing can fail.

The true humor in all this is that the entitled little girl who put up that sign did so in a fit of adolescent rage over the university refusing to build a special ramp for her to use to get into and out of her lawn room after she hurt her foot. The university offered alternative housing for her until she healed. Of course, this made the prima donna spitting mad so she posted a vulgar sign and pretended, as all modern liberals do, that it had something to do with systemic racism. With apologies to the late, great Bruce Lee, this action occasioned the release of a tragic comedy starring Jim Ryan entitled, “Enter the Weasel”. In this epic Ryan reprised Don Knotts’ role as Barney Fife as he allowed himself to become a public punching bag for a hysterical spoiled little twit who didn’t get her ramp. The Academy Awards may bestow on Ryan an Oscar for his performance as a hapless worm only he wasn’t acting so it may have to be an Oscar for best documentary. After all, Cuomo got an Emmy for his fine work with COVID so why not an Oscar for Ryan?
I stopped supporting UVa when they effectively canceled the Pep Band. The satirical antics of the Pep Band depicting Maryland Governor Marvin Mandel in prison garb wearing a ball and chain were intolerable while a sign that says F*** UVa is just fine and dandy. Spare me the first amendment drivel.
How do you think Ryan would react to a lawn door sign that read, “I support the Klu Klux Klan”?
