Some of the smartest kids in my school were from families who were in the first wave of Vietnamese “boat people”. Those kids were serious about learning English and they learned it quickly, surpassing many of their “born in the USA” classmates in very short order.
If all English language learners in our public schools were as motivated as the Vietnamese kids I knew, the state would save a lot of money on “English as a second language” programs.

I think most are motivated, but they need to be taught properly. Tough nut to crack after they have been out of school in this country for a year. But it must be done and done well. Most will prove big assets to this country if we help them now.

My daughter-in-law came from Korea when she was 12 speaking very little English. She ended up graduating from TJ, W&M (Undergrad) and UVA (Masters). There is truth in what you said.
