From the editorial: “The apparent purpose of these sessions is to do what Mr. Kaine evidently felt he could not in the course of the gubernatorial campaign: rally support for major new revenue, probably including taxes, to provide a portion of the $100 billion or so in extra transportation funding that the state believes is needed by 2030.”
“Apparent purpose?”
Those who thought this was a status quo election apparently were wrong. Apparently, those who thought Russ Potts’s 2% was a rejection of major new revenue initiatives and roadbuilding were wrong, too.
What Governor-elect Kaine is doing with these sessions is fine and good, but again I ask why we bother to have election campaigns in Virginia. The real issues aren’t discussed (where’s the town hall on the death penalty?) and winning candidates apparently aren’t bound by anything they said during the campaign.
Happy Thanksgiving to all.
Steve, Will, go enjoy some turkey and give Tim Thanksgiving and Christmas off from bashing. We have plenty of other time.
NLS, please don’t misunderstand me. I’m not bashing the Governor-elect. He won and he is a good man. We are all complicit in not making elections about real choices, however.
No matter how bad traffic is or how bad we think our transportation infrastructure might be, we have so much to be thankful for. I know our leaders will do their best to do right as they see that right.
Again, Happy Thanksgiving to all.
NLS, please feel free to misunderstand the blue dog.
It’s not bashing either. I’m just pointing out a WaPo editorial about Governor-elect Tim Kaine and a possible ‘major’ transportation tax. You’re the spin artist here.
Furthermore, Thanksgiving is a national holiday, not a Christian holy day.
However, I’m thankful for what Christ has done for us — each and everyday of my life.

Blue Dog only thinks it’s bashing when it’s about him…..
Now that he thinks the religious right has the upper hand he has found Jesus. Pander 101……..
I’m picking up on the same WaPo quote that Will is: “The apparent purpose of these sessions is to do what Mr. Kaine evidently felt he could not in the course of the gubernatorial campaign: rally support for major new revenue…”
Kaine made his policy on transportation revenue crystal clear: No new taxes until a constitutional amendment is passed creating a lockbox of transportation funds. If the WaPo is right, and Kaine is looking for a justification to raise taxes, then it would be a colossal betrayal to the voters of Virginia. (Not that the Washington Post would care.)
But I see no evidence of that. More likely, the WaPo is engaging in wishful thinking. The editorial writers have such tunnel vision that they can’t conceive of a transportation policy that addresses congestion without raising taxes.
Bashing… Pandering… the Religious Right… and then to blame Jesus?
Oh please! The WaPo published a column about Kaine and transportation taxes. That’s all.

I’d be surprised to see any major tax hike, other than a user fees like tolls, to pay for transportation, unless it comes from Republicans (on the theory that only Nixon can go to China).
Kaine has said repreatedly that we can’t pave our way out of the problem. He wants changes to they way new development is planned to help catch problems before they are created.

Steven,
You’re so sad that I’m ashamed of you. Trying to tie Jesus into your ambition? How dare you!
Wicked Wanda: Shame on you dear for judging me!
Such a sad attempt at that.
Next time, put the broom down and try a little harder.
I double-dare you!
