Threats and attacks have been ongoing prior – Look at Pelosi's husband or folks like Anthony Fauci, or election officials in Georgia, for three.

    Not exactly nothing until now.

Yep, a plague on both your houses. Nancy Boy, you and Larry are officially part of the problem.

Ya'll aren't privy to the inside data. Since the "upgrade" Bacon's Rebellion has gone into the crapper on readership. Recovering the subscriptions has proved impossible. Basically just the comment addicts yelling at each other with nobody else reading.

I agree. I've written over 100 articles for this blog. Not many in the 2 1/2 years since I decided to un-retire but a lot over the years.

I appreciate all the work done by Jim Bacon, Steve Haner, Dick Sizemore-Hall, etc.

I have access to the insider data to which Steve refers but have not looked lately.

Steve – by "upgrade" do you mean the new WordPress (I think) format or something else?

          4. Bacon's Rebellion had 1,500 to 2,000 subscribers before we switched to a new theme (because the old one is no longer supported by WordPress). We have been unable to recover those subscribers so far but we're working on it. It'll cost a few bucks — what doesn't? — but thanks to the generosity of readers in responding to my last appeal for donations, we have the funds. I'm optimistic we can get this fixed soon.

Hear hear. Virginia needs a website for those who want to be actively engaged, have a heap of fun and bust on progressives and wokeists.

I am confident that Steve Haner's comments below are sincere. ("I don't write to be abused by Nancy, Larry and the Half Wit Troll.")

Accordingly, IMO, it is not worth keeping Nancy, Larry and Eric The Half Wit Troll around. IMO they are pests, and are here primarily to (a) be pests and (b) to drive away people who would otherwise add value to the BR community. If I had a choice between keeping Steve on the site, versus Nancy/Larry/Half-Troll…is there really a choice? Are we really having this discussion? WTFF?

"They" have been offered multiple opportunities to stand up as men/women and post on the main page—and yet they lurk in the comments and nibble at the ankles who do write front page content for your site. Like termites.

At some point, the proprietor of a respectable establishment must grab the pesticide and neutralize the pests.

This hapless, uneducated Karen thinks it was "Trump's security detail" that failed to stop the shooter yesterday?

          How stupid is she?

It was Biden's Secret Service who failed to stop the shooter before he killed one person, injured two more and almost got Trump killed.

The same Secret Service who has a DEI promote put in charge by Biden.

"Cheatle joined the United States Secret Service in 1995.[1] In 2017 and 2018, she served as deputy assistant director. She also served as special-agent-in-charge in the Grand Rapids, Michigan, office. She became the first woman to serve as assistant director of Protective Operations, a department tasked with protection of the president and dignitaries, and managed a budget of over $133.5 million.[2] During her tenure, Cheatle was assigned to the Vice Presidential Protective Division during the Obama administration.[3]

From 2019 to 2022, Cheatle served as senior director of global security at PepsiCo, where she was responsible for directing and implementing security protocols for the company's facilities in North America. Her role involves developing risk management assessment and risk mitigation."

At her highest level, she supervised a budget of $133.5M? The annual budget for the US Secret Service is just under $3B.

          That's 4.5% of the Secret Service's budget.

          Then, she went to Pepsi.

          Pepsi?

But Biden brought her back and put her in charge.

And her team let a gunman get onto a roof with a rifle 130 yards from the protectee,

Any decent hunter could drop a deer from 130 yards with no problem. Chest shot.

          Karen is an idiot.

Trump's lucky Crooks went for a head shot instead of center of mass. There was a lot more mass there and that 1/4 inch he missed by would not have been noticeable a foot and a half lower. It did not look like Trump was wearing body armor, although most of the SS were.

ps, in this case the appropriate acronym is DIE.

The 24/7 cable TV pseudo-news channels, which broadcast little news and only the rantings of talking heads doesn't help. Advertisers could stop buying ads until the networks go back to reporting news and fire all their opinionated hosts. CNN does it in Europe. Headline News used to be very valuable. When I traveled on business, one of the first things I did after checking into my hotel was turn on HLN.

Note that in a follow up I wrote both parties are at fault, a compilation of R's saying similar stuff would be easy to make. J6 would be a big part of it. We don't know much about this young assassin or what motivated him, but soon enough I guess we will. A "plague on both your houses" has been a constant theme with me since Charlottesville 2017 and the 2020 riots.

Heads need to roll at the Secret Service. To leave that rooftop without a posted guard is inexcusable. And shame, shame on the media coverage which has paid so little attention to the person killed and the other two wounded. Granted the names are still unknown, but they were just sitting in the stands between the shooter and the podium.

This site WAS egregious in terms of the roofs but many of the rally sites are "open" in terms of long expanses to a treeline and I would think pretty problematical in terms of manpower and time to setup security that encompasses long distance sniper threats. Trump and his security team may well want to re-think how they do outdoor rally's that have such threats. There ARE 'crazies" out there and efforts to get labels on them won't address the threat itself.

        I'd like to see it.

But you can't make that compilation.

        Because the material is lacking.

        I'm all eyes and ears.

Make a 2;20 compilation of Republican elected officials and "celebrities" saying the want to punch Biden in the face or blow up the White House. or holding up a replica of Biden's head drenched in blood.

Facts: Thomas Matthew Crooks's father reported to be moderate conservative. Mother moderate liberal. The boy registered as Republican. Reported to be highly intelligent. Add this tee-shirt he's wearing:

This all adds up to a Republican never-Trumper, out to save what Washington Jefferson, Madison, bequeathed us.

Who buys into the "existential threat to the democracy, Trump = Hitler" meme. Intelligent. Understands that if Hitler is to be stopped, it must be before he comes to power. After is too late.

So he will sacrifice himself, to take out Trump, for the country.

He is not alone in this sort of wishful thinking. Nancy Naive with commendable candor says below she is not sure what's worse, "My not feeling bad about not feeling bad, or my feeling bad about not having to feel worse."

The objective was to take out Trump before the Republican convention. So they'll have to scramble to pick somebody else.

But if you shoot at a king you must kill him. Here is the Russian take on the consequence of Crooks's failure: "Trump has Biden's balls in his hand."

No, Jim. I will not "step back from the abyss" as you ask. You can ban me from the site if you like but this is not a two way street.

Did you forget the Democratic proposal to deny Secret Service protection to anybody convicted of a "felony"?

Let me help refresh your memory …

    https://www.newsweek.com/trump-assassination-attempt-bennie-thompson-secret-service-security-1924954

    Then, guess what?

A paid staffer for the buffoon Bennie Thompson (who sponsored that legislation) posted a message on Facebook yesterday AFTER the assassination attempt. Here's an article detailing what she wrote:

    https://www.supertalk.fm/rep-bennie-thompson-staffer-facing-scrutiny-for-despicable-statements-over-trump-attack/

"I don't condone violence but get you some shooting lessons so you don't miss next time."

"That's what your hate speech got you."

Couldn't happened to a nicer fellow but it was staged."

Again, posted AFTER the assassination attempt.

Yeah, Bennie Bozo fired her. But what was she doing working for him in the first place?

And then, Thompson shows his true hypocrisy by posting:

"There is no room in American democracy for political violence. I am grateful for law enforcementโ€™s fast response to this incident.

I am glad the former President is safe, and my thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved."

    Are you kidding me?

He wanted Donald unprotected. Had he succeeded Donald Trump and many others would be dead today.

That's the kind of "both sides" logic you adhere to?

So it is now coming out that not only was the shooter a white, male, registered-Republican, gun enthusiast (of course with their gun of choice) but also appears to be staunchly Conservative. In addition, the absurd contention that Liberals are the ones who motivated the shooter with their violent rhetoric has fallen apart (as often happens). Assassination attempt appears to also be friendly fire and likely not even politically motivated โ€ฆ so now the Conservative messengers must find a new way to blame Bidenโ€ฆ. that abyss is the siren to the Rightโ€ฆ

    And, for the record ….

Biden five days ago: "It's time to put Trump in a bullseye."

That was not an incitement to violence.

It was an unfortunate choice of words in retrospect but not a call for violence against Mr. Trump.

However, his call today for an investigation of what happened in Pennsylvania yesterday to be conducted by the current head of the Secret Service is clearly an attempt to avoid accountability.

    1. LarrytheG Avatar
      LarrytheG

I concur with your assessment of the Secret Service but they need to put out their report – for the record , and then others to add that to a more independent look.

Biden's plea for moderation would have been more convincing if he had promised to lead by example and refrain from railing against the Repubs as threats to democracy, that democracy itself was on the ballot, and if he had criticized his supporters for comparing Trump to Hitler. Trump has said he is rewriting his convention speech to be more uniting and less dividing.

It is hard to see how "It is time to put Trump in a bullseye" is not an incitement to violence when 5 days later someone does exactly that. That is certainly how it was viewed when Palin used what looked like scope cross hairs on a map of targeted elections.

You are exactly right, the investigation on who dropped the ball needs to be done outside of the SS.

Why was that rooftop not secured? The roofs of that group of buildings were the only plausible spots outside of the secured perimeter for an assassin that were elevated with a line of sight to the podium. It was an obvious security issue. For comparison, roughly 150 yards was about the same distance Oswald was from Kennedy. You'd have hoped the SS had a learning curve. SS on the ground and their snipers performed well, it was the failure to secure the venue close outside the perimeter where everyone was physically searched where things went wrong.

We would expect the SS is trying to figure out why they failed, for the first time since Reagan, to ensure nothing bad happened. Public accountability for the failure needs to come from outside the SS.

For a start the director should lose her job. A fundamental principle of management is that we can delegate the authority to act, but not the responsibility for those (in)actions.

    3. Lefty665 Avatar

Followup on Biden and lowering the temperature. In a subsequent interview Biden tried to dance away from his "put Trump in the bullseye" comment by denying that he had said cross hairs. The interviewer corrected him with his actual quote. "Bullseye". Interviewer then asked if Joe included himself in his call to lower the temperature. Joe said that he had an obligation to confront threats to democracy.

That's step back from the abyss for thee and me, but not for Joe. Too cute by half. That also makes it clear that Joe takes no responsibility for his history of inflammatory rhetoric calling Trump and the Repubs threats to democracy that must be stopped. It won't be long before he's back to demonizing Trump and the Repubs.

So much for the sweet sounds of oh we're all in this together despite political differences crap. They were just window dressing to dance by the moment because he had to say something and that sounded "Presidential". They were also a denial of Joe's role in fomenting violence.

So yeah, step back from the abyss is absolutely the right thing and constructive for our national mental health. Just don't expect to get any help in doing that from Joe. He's said his piece and will be back out slinging mud as soon as he thinks a decent interval has passed.

Trump has said his brush with mortality has caused him to rewrite his convention speech from fire breathing to conciliatory. We will see how far he goes and how well he does with that. Got my fingers crossed for him. He may have had a teachable moment that changes him as a politician. We will see.

Apparently, the real president (i.e., Jill Biden) was at an event on Saturday too and she ended up getting agents moved from Trump to her.

I'm not sure how much to trust these "sources" but maybe the Secret Service should be investigating themselves on this one.

While it takes different forms on the right and the left, make no mistake, extremism is the driving force in both parties today.
