“She’ll Be Destroyed on Social Media by Noon”

From MSNBC pundit Joe Scarborough this morning on the context of the 2024 elections:

“You know, my daughter at the University of Virginia, she’s afraid to raise her hand in class because if she says something that’s politically incorrect, she will immediately be cancelled. She’ll be shunned from class. She’ll be destroyed on social media by noon. So, they just sit in class quiet….”

“If any of you out there say, oh, that’s just a conservative, a White Southern guy da-da-da, that’s why you’re losing. That’s why you’re losing. Because that’s what I heard. I didn’t hear it from Republicans. I didn’t hear it from Trumpers. I heard it from Democrats over the past three or four years: Their kids were afraid to talk in class and say something unpopular because they would be canceled. And it’s an epidemic….

“It happens in New York City schools. It happens in colleges. And all of this adds up. People go, come on, come on, this is crazy.”

Not the kind of word-of-mouth we like seeing for UVA. –– JAB

    He clearly was not dissing UVA per se but just about all campuses and the whole culture of social media peer pressure bullying. Damn, is there hope for Scarborough?

      I see the word "bullying" and we know that this kind of "cancellling" is not just in college with older kids.

      It's also quite rampant in k-12 also via social media and also over someone being "different", not just on their politically incorrect speech.

      Same church different pew?

      I see no evidence of that. At the end of the day, Joe works for MSNBC and knows where his paycheck comes from. He will tow the party line.

      MSNBC won't just admit that the Democrats lost because they ran with a flawed candidate who wasn't nominated by the rank and file. Instead, the problem must be with the American people.

    Now remember, UVA has a great "free speech" ranking from FIRE.
    This shows that a mere piece of paper – the so-called free speech statement – carries a lot of weight, AND how bad it is in academia.

    Consider the Parrhesiastes doctor revolt at UVA Health. The docs are terrified of retaliation. Are they paranoid? Or have they witnessed actions that cause their wariness?

    Consider the FEC contribution records that go 95% to Dems. How badly out of step with the entire country is the faculty AND the administration? Want to take odds on anyone in Ryan's cabinet or any Dean voting for Trump?

    Consider Covid policy and the Trump era – how come not one person in the Med School or Law school raised any concerns about the Covid policies (that didn't work)? NOT ONE. I, a history major, had a better record. UVA Health has spent millions defending itself for the religious discrimination claims from Covid. How come NOT ONE objected to the lawfare against Trump and the political persecution of J6ers, some still awaiting trial, and nearly all sentenced for a glorified trespass, maybe even entrapped. No more old school ACLU civil rights types anywhere at UVA Law? No – they know to say anything perceived as possibly helping Trump would lead to cancellation.

    Besides the Honor System being on life support, the Jeffersonian pursuit of truth is also ailing badly.

      It is not the university that will destroy a student. It is the fellow students who will make a big deal out of anything said or written on social media. Why risk saying anything.

        You aren't wrong. The fraternities just want to keep their heads down and survive, because they know the Admin wants to kick them out for calling a "goat" a "goat," while the Admin overlooks the misdeeds of their privileged activist lawbreakers.

          And you aren’t wrong, either! But, it begins in K-12, and the fault is on us for letting it happen.
          I believe the biggest fault was for Christians letting themselves be silenced by the Madalyn Murray O’Hair Supreme Court no prayer in school decision. Nature abhors a vacuum (or water finds the leaks) and 60 years of degradation of societal fabric shows…

      The ACLU has purged all the old school civil rights types. It is the wokest of the woke. Sad that it has abandoned its mission to protect the 1st Amendment.

        Irony of ironies…I have been included in group emails for free speech orgs with Nadine Strossen. My Bingo card of 40 years ago DID NOT HAVE THAT SQUARE!

    How sad. I went to law school with people with divergent political, economic and social beliefs. We not only debated with each other in the classroom but also in the hallways and common areas. While emotions were often strong, there was no animosity or hostility.

    I'm still with Justice Brandeis' admonition — to have more free speech and not less.

    You think it is wrong that there are social consequences for our speech that we should consider before we open our mouths? Can it be taken too far? Of course, and that should stop. It is also a valuable lesson as well – a campaign for consequence-free speech is not the answer.

    Scarborough IS on the left, no question. There are a number of folks on FOX that are is analogue in my view.

    the issue between blacks and Hispanics and women is real.

    Harris ran behind Biden pretty much across the board on total votes.

    Once time is spent getting into the Demographics of who showed up for Biden and not Harris, we might learn more.

    It probably would not be wrong to ask if America would support/elect a woman for POTUS demographically ( all, not just race/ethinicity), similar to men and again for a Woman of color.

    The Dems seem to have lost a lot of middle class working people in general, in part, because society
    itself is changing, it ain't your fathers middle class.
