Reilly Riffs on the Culture Wars

Willfred Reilly, author of “Lies My Liberal Teacher Told Me: Debunking the False Narratives Defining America’s School Curricula,” is one of conservatism’s most versatile culture warriors. Slavery, Native Americans, DEI, hippies, colonialism, capitalism, white flight, nuclear weapons, you name it, he takes it on. He touched on several of those topics earlier this month at the University of Virginia in a speech co-hosted by The Jefferson Council. I give a brief introduction, but you can jump ahead to see Reilly himself at the 4:30 mark.

I felt like I knew Reilly from reading his books and interviewing him for Bacon’s Rebellion but it was a pleasure getting to spend time with him in person. He’s not just a culture warrior — he’s a good fellow who leavens his discussion of serious issues with an easy manner and gentle humor. Conservative readers will love him, liberals will hate him. — JAB

Prof. Reilly has evolved to become a darling of the right. In 2020, he debated Jared Taylor (VA's Oakton resident and leader of a prominent white identarian organization) stating everything Taylor says is wrong. Ironically, one of Reilly's books was published by Regnery, which supported and funded the eugenics movement which had promoted Taylor's American Rennaissance. Riffing may be that in which Reilly is proficient.

    โ€œheโ€™s a good fellowโ€ฆ liberals will hate himโ€

I donโ€™t hate anyone who is a good fellow. I have many friends who are very Conservative and I like them just fine even if we disagree adamantly. You seem to define a personโ€™s worth based on where they stand on your so-called culture war issues. In fact, you seem to value individuals mostly on how ferociously they will fight your political war. Might want to re-examine those valuesโ€ฆ

Political and religious fervor are similar in more than a few aspects. I have a lecture too.
