Publisher’s Note to Bloggers

Dear Bacon’s Rebellion Bloggers,

I have been gratified by the response to the Bacon’s Rebellion blog. It has more than fulfilled my hope that it would become a forum for the exchange of perspectives on issues of importance to Virginians. The quality of the commentary has been high, and participants have largely honored the spirit of collegiality that I would like to maintain. Even though we often disagree–and disagree vigorously–we can debate facts and logic without engaging in ad hominem attacks.

The Bacon’s Rebellion blog started as an experiment, just to see what would happen. In just a couple of months, the blog clearly has become something worth building upon. Unfortunately, as popularity has increased, we seem to be running into bandwidth problems. A number of participants have experienced difficulty posting and commenting on the blog. Blogger is fine for a free service, but, let’s face it, you get what you pay for. My first priority is to migrate to a superior blogging platform.

If anyone can suggest a superior blogging service that charges reasonable rates, please let me know. Also, if any of you can recommend particular features that a good blogging service should have, please let me know.

    I moved from Blogger to TypePad on Monday. The TypePad service has three price tiers, from $5 to $15 a month, depending on the features you’d like. They also have a 30-day free trial.

    There are one or two minor Blogger features I miss on TypePad, but the most significant of these is how TypePad tries to rearrange the blogroll (which BR hasn’t got anyway). On the other hand, I’ve never had a log-in or post publication problem on TypePad the way I often had them on Blogger.

    Note that it may take a couple of days for traffic to return to normal after a relocation.

    The Blue Dog’s two cents:

    1. Join the Old Dominion blog alliance — If possible.

    2. Jaded JD is right, the typepad is a nice service.

    3. Also, a section for our favorite BR blogs.

    4. Enlist BR contributors Paul Goldman, Pat McSweeney and John Taylor to join bacon’s blog bits.

    For what it’s worth, I use WordPress, and I have been very pleased with its performance. Very stable, very functional, yet very user-friendly as well.

    My host set up my WordPress system for me (Blogs About Hosting – tell them I sent you). I think they can set up the blog at the regular Bacon’s Rebellion site, if you’d like.

    I’d reccomend Typepad if you are looking for a simple out of the box solution, WordPress if you up to creating a domain and managing your own web space.
