I would hope that it would never happen here. But if a Virginia Governor were to plead “no contest” to misdemeanors involving official duties,” I would hope that he or she would resign immediately.
I would also hope partisans of every stripe would expect nothing less.

It’s not the ‘misdemeanor involving duties’, which could be petty. It’s violations of ethics that makes the charge so serious for elected positions. $10 million missing doesn’t help, and his refusal to resign is mind-boggling.
The state committee should (and can) force the resignation. If they stay silent, or worse, defend him; the voters will tell them where to stuff their ethics. Which is exactly as it should be.

BTW, a serious message has already been sent. Dems almost pulled off a huge upset in a special election in a seriously gerrymandered district. Of course there’s the obligitory allegations of voter fraud.
Add to this “Coingate”, and Republicans winning in Ohio might be over for a while.
The only reason the special election was as close as it was in SW Ohio is due to the fact that the Democrat ran as a Republican. Even though he couldn’t stand Bush his campaign ads featured the President.
That said, the current leadership of the GOP in Ohio is completely out of touch and it could easily go blue for the next governor. However, I think Ken Blackwell would be a good candidate and could win.
I was hoping someone of your stripe would admit what would have been expected if this were a Democrat.

I wonder how you feel, then, about a crooked Gate City mayor arranging with the current AG to quash an investigation into his own electoral fraud in that AG’s home town?
