If a Virginia newspaper editor works for one candidate in a campaign, shouldn’t that newspaper publish the fact in their paper? Isn’t it unethical to not have full disclosure? Especially if the editor is one of their editorial page editors?

Are you referring to CG2? Because in that case, how can you be more outward than having it in your profile? Especially if your posts are, for whatever your job, pretty darn measured and interesting rather than partisan screeds.
If you aren’t, and are just being vague, then stop it with the dishonest insinuations and come out and state your case plainly about who it is you mean.
-
Claire is not an editorial writer than I am aware. Are you confusing the two members of the Marcus family, one on the Bolling campaign and one on the RTD editorial page staff? Is G.C. Morse working on a campaign and writing for the Daily Press? I’d be surprised. I agree — don’t drop some broad accusation — be specific or leave it alone, especially less than a week before the election.
-
The Richmond Times-Dispatch, I believe, has strict rules prohibiting its reporters and editorial writers from participating in political campaigns. I don’t think they’re even allowed to donate money to candidates — certainly not candidates they’re covering. I would be surprised if the same ethical prescriptions weren’t applied at other newspapers. At the very least, a newspaper would be expected to fully disclose any such connection.
Is your question hypothetical, Jim, or are you referring to a real-life case?
-
I was wondering about Morse and the Daily Press.
-
You were “wondering”? Seems to me it’s a pretty straight accusation. Proof? Any at all?
-
Jim, If what you imply is true, then I would consider it to be a very serious ethical charge — and a legitimate topic for Bacon’s Rebellion. Now that you’ve put Gordon Morse’s name into the public domain, I think you need to either back up your proposition with hard facts or retract it with an apology.

Bowden is just upset because he is a Gear supporter and the Daily Press endorsment went to Randy Gilliland for Delegate
-
Perhaps James is testy because Gear is on the ropes. While it is not a foolproof method, a good rule of thump is to follow the money. Incumbents who get last minute infusions of cash, especially from party committees and their colleagues, are often in trouble. Conversly, challengers who get like contributions are “hot.”
According to VPAP http://www.vpap.org/cands/largepre.cfm
Gear received $60,764 in large contributions on Monday from five GOP sources. As an incumbent, Gear is a drag on his caucus. -
Nice try Short Pump and Anon, but not right. I’ll be more forthcoming on the nature of my inquiry later.
Tom Gear will win, but not by the 2:1 or 3:1 he should. Drag on the caucus? That is funny. I suppose that is why the Speaker and Sen Allen have been here to support him. The drag on the caucus are the 17 RINOs.
A Daily Press endorsement is not a good thing for a conservative.
The same tax and spend, profit from government parasites and socialists have fought Tom in 01, 03 and now 05. Our local HD race is about populism vs. power.
-
Del. Gear is an absolute drag on the caucus. Few in the House GOP much like him, and none take him the least bit seriously.
The “Group of 17” have proven themselves to be keepers of the Commonwealth’s flame. Let’s not forget that polls consistently show 65-70% of the electorate were in agreement with the ’04 budget/tax compromise (yes, tax increase).
Del. Gear has little standing to talk about taxes, in any regard, since he can’t seem to pay them timely like the rest of his constituents.
That the Speaker has stepped in with $40,000 for the Gear campaign speaks volumes about the state of it. And that which speaks even louder is that so many of his nearby Peninsula House colleagues haven’t given at all. Could it be that even his “friends” won’t be shedding any tears if he’s bounced from office?
-
JamesRiverGOP: You are way too funny. The 17 RINOs are the keeper of the flame? Hiding behind your handle is good idea so you don’t embarass yourself in public if you really are a Republican.
The polls say many things. Like the Tax scam of 02 would pass, etc. It depends on how you word them and who presents the facts. If you ask Virginians if they are glad their taxes created a huge surplus the Dems and RINOs will spend – you will get a different answer.
Respect, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. Maybe there are some folks in the GA who don’t love Tom. The ones who went fishing for a candidate to run against him might be on the top of the list. Now, that wasn’t neighborly was it?
No Republican wants Tom Gear replaced by Democrat Randy Gilliland. None. RINOs do.

I thought Bowden needed to back up his claim or apologize, Jim.
He’s done neither.
-
Jim and I have corresponded about this. The situation is complicated, and I’m not sure what the next course of action is. I’m pondering the best course of action.
-
Still waiting….
How complicated could this situation be? Either Bowden can back up his accusation, or he cannot.
Should we expect this slander to remain unexplained until after the election?
-
Guess so.
Pitiful.
