The 2020 Census reported that approximately one in five Virginians (22.6%) were aged 60 and older, placing Virginia in the United Nations’ “aging society” category, writes Sol Baik for the Weldon Cooper Center’s StatChat blog. The “Eastern Shore” counties, clustered to the east and west of the Chesapeake Bay, had the highest percentage of seniors (36.8%). The Eastern Shore also had the highest percentage of what Bacon categorizes as the “really old” (85 or older), while the Southwest region has the higher percentage of oldsters with disabilities (41%).
