Have I got this right? Y0u have fewer children with top scores and fewer children with failing scores, so they “look” more equal– but no way to know how much of the 0f the material they have learned. How is this going to help minority children get into the governor’s schools?

Feldman’s ideas are already present in the grading practices of most of Virginia’s large districts. One common complaint is that students know how to game the Feldman’s system on things such as late homework, zeros, and so on. Standards based grading will likely come to your school district starting with elementary and gradually work its way to high school. I thought it was interesting that the college director of admissions is not too bothered about how students are graded. Hope he is not using one of those magic eight balls for admissions purposes.

I have to point out that SBG is not โFeldmanโs Systemโ. He appears, at least to me, to have exploited it.

SBG has been on the radar in Loudoun for a good while now. The only thing preventing it was a pushback from parents. Mom and Dad know what letter grades mean but not the SBG number system.

Two points.
As for the admissions directors, it is worth reading the link to the whole list of their statements published by York County. I found them interesting.
As I wrote, but perhaps did not emphasize enough, SBG was around well before Feldman declared traditional grading racist.

In practice, SBG often becomes “take the same test until you pass it.” I’ve heard directly from teachers in an eastern VA school system that teachers are actually discouraged from making new versions of the test questions.

School administrators love any system that prevents longitudinal comparisons or allows hard measure evaluations of student progress. Accountability is a messy thing. The latest fad is grabbed every few years to turn apples into oranges into bananas and avoid the A word at all costs….Even the SAT keeps changing, and of course now that is fading from the scene.

The practice of grading has always been subjective. Leaving race out of it, as a teacher, I want to tell parents the truth. Mastered or not mastered is truthful, but what is mastery? Can I miss 7/10 or 3/10 to show mastery. If homework counts as a zero and 75 percent of the grade is homework, does the kid just hate homework or does he not know the material? Does the teacher start each grading period anew or carryover the 30% from the last grading period. If so, what does his 70% mean this grading period? I had easy teachers and gate keepers. Is Standard Based Grading so bad? If I keep taking the same test over and over until I pass, perhaps. But if in the end the profile tells what I know and do not know, that isnโt so bad? If my profile says I donโt know something, but my SOL assessment says I do, will you change my profile?
