Heed the Signs

Looks like the down-ticket GOP candidates are falling into line behind the Kilgore campaign team on the weighty issue of the display of signage during the Shad planking. “The sign war is considered a demonstration of grassroots strength and organization,” noted Kilgore campaign manager Ken Hutcheson in an April 7 memo that has just come to my attention. But all down-ticket campaigns “would come together as a whole to assist in the Kilgore effort to win the sign war against Tim Kaine.”

The candidates for lieutenant governor (Bill Bolling, Sean Connaughton and Gil Davis) and for attorney general (Steve Baril and Bob McDonnell) all agreed to display only those signs authorized by the Kilgore for Governor campaign. Each down-ticket campaign will be responsible for providing up to volunteers and/or staff to assist with Kilgore signage. Said the Hutcheson memo: “There will be no down-ticket sign war within the Republican Party.”

Memo to the George Fitch for Governor campaign: Better send a busload of volunteers to the shad planking. No signs = no visibility with the political establishment and punditocracy = no campaign.

An addendum to this posting comes from Ken Hutcheson. In case the original posting left the wrong message, the idea to present a unified sign-posting front originated from the down-state candidates, not the Kilgore campaign. Says Hutcheson: “They came to us and asked us to broker the deal with all the campaigns, which we were happy to do.”

This Just In… Word comes over the transom at Bacon’s Rebellion world headquarters that George Fitch will be attending the shad planking, has reserved a table, and “will be available to talk to the media and the public about his campaign.”

No news, however, on whether Fitch plans to bus in a load of volunteers and overwhelm the Kilgore/Bolling/Davis/Connaughton/
Baril/McDonnell campaigns with Fitch for Governor signs.

To Laszlo: It all sounds ridiculous to me. All I can suggest is that in politics, perception is reality.

  4. With all the problems the candidates need to deal with and talk about, all we get are who has the most signs at the Shad Planking. All preception and no reality to me Jim.
Games children play. At least we can get Kilgore on the same stage as Kaine.

Who is buying the beer and what brand is each candidate serving. I stopped going when Judge Williams died.

I’m sorry about Hanger. I really feel bad about his son. They worked very hard. Maybe Transportation or the lack of it will get some
    attention.
