  1. I’m not sure what you’re implying – are you saying that returning voting rights to felons is wrong? Or that Governor Warner goes out of his way to do it?

    Also from the story:

“In Virginia, a felon loses voting rights permanently unless the governor restores them. Only five other states also deny felons rights for life. Virginia is one of 14 states that do not automatically restore voting rights upon release from prison.”

So what would you have, Phil. Paint a scarlet letter on them?

We ought to be locking a lot of folks up for HOW they vote!

  4. TV commercial: 2006 US Senate campaign

    The setting: A Virginia Prison

As men in orange uniforms line up to vote …

    The announcer states:

“Democratic candidate Mark Warner wants these convicted felon’s votes …

…while Senator George ‘no parole’ Allen wants to build more prisons to house them.”

    Had enough of this nonsense?

    Vote for commonsense…

Vote for US Senate candidate Barnie Day!

  5. Phil,

I had a friend that did wrong and paid his debt. Being able to vote again was important to him. Just a little person that will never be anybody. Where is his room in your party.

like laszlo, I have a friend who did some very stupid stuff when he was young. Paid his debt and is now a very productive and responsible citizen. Phil’s point seems to be that these guys should never or rarely get the vote back and that, in a state like Virginia, any governor who faciliates that transition back to voting status is somehow suspect (he doesn’t say it in so many words, so perhaps I’m over-extrapolating). So let’s get to the core point: Phil, assuming that a convicted felon serves his time and returns to society, do you feel he should not have the right to vote because of his past misdeeds? Explain.

    Lazlo –

I know a guy like that too. Seems to me that anyone that cares enough to show up should be able to vote.

I know this is late but I can’t resist… Would Phil be glad that President Bush’s 1976 DUI charge was only a misdemeanor? Most DUI charges now would be felonies… so if you can’t vote, can you still be president?
