Boil-Water Advisory

There’s an irony in the fact that the City of Richmond has extended its boil-water advisory until Saturday, even as city officials, generically speaking, find themselves in increasingly… hot water. That’s no comment on Mayor Danny Avula who just arrived on the job, but I’m betting that some city administrators and councilpersons are feeling the heat. –JAB

At least the mayor of Richmond isn't on a taxpayer funded boondoggle to Ghana like the hapless mayor of LA was.

  2. I must defend the City of Richmond for their actions during the Boil Water Advisory (BWA).

Technically, the BWA has not been extended. Once implemented, BWAs are of indefinite length, with the advisory being lifted only after all repairs are complete and a minimum two rounds of bacteriological tests come back with negative results (that is, no bacteria found). The two rounds of samples must typically be drawn 24 hours apart from various locations around the water system. This time can be shortened to 16 ours with approval from VDH-ODW. The bacterial tests themselves take 24 hours to complete.

After incidents such as the failures in Richmond earlier this week, all repairs must be completed and all service restored before VDH-ODW will allow the first round of testing to take place. It is my understanding that Richmond was not cleared for their first round of testing until late yesterday evening, January 9, 2025. Sixteen hours from their first tests puts the second round of tests being drawn late morning to early afternoon today, Friday January 10. So, the earliest time for results to be completed is tomorrow afternoon, leaving the BWA in effect until that time.

And keep in mind, the above timeframes are minimums. There are plenty of things that can go wrong that will prevent VDH-ODW from being able to release the water provider to begin testing.

Finally, whomever was at fault for the original failures, given the inclement weather and the amount of work required, I think Richmond's public utilities personnel did an outstanding job to complete the repairs and restoration of service as quickly as they did. And the folks at VDH-ODW should be commended as well for the efforts they put in assisting Richmond and the other localities had to issue BWAs. In my experience, VDH-OPW is one of the best and most effective divisions of any state agency in Virginia.

L.A. is better off when Mayor Bass is away. Deputy Mayor Brian Williams is on leave after being investigated for calling in a bomb threat to City Hall. Who was in charge at City Hall? Just like the White House?

Without Stoney around Richmond has lost the ultimate handy man with a crane, Devon Henry.

Mayor Phoney provided Devon with enough money to retire in luxury. Must be nice.

  6. What else is in hot water is Levar Stoney's Lieutenant Governor campaign. Has this killed his chances?

Trying to understand if boil water means you can't shower in it. And at restaurants – most automatic dishwashers heat the water to 140 anyhow.
Lots of folks drink bottled water anyhow. So how much of a hardship is
    it really?

Democrats proven feckless and incompetent time and again. As certain as the rising of the sun. And yet people actually continue to vote for them. Perhaps we can move on to studying that issue?

  9. I expressed a concern several years ago that I will repeat today.

How can someone without power be expected to boil their water?

The boil water advisory is especially concerning when what lead to it, also impacts everyone's ability to boil their water – power outage.

Citizens of Richmond may have power this time, but several years ago when we had a severe ice storm across the state, the water treatment systems in some areas contaminated the water. Homes without power were told to boil their water. That's a serious problem.

My point is that critical infrastructure such as power, water and water treatment should be examined across the state. This isn't the first winter storm and won't be the last.

Richmond was so much better off when General Lees statue was standing. Maybe Richmond's DEI hoi polloi Democrats should hire 72 genders and fix the climate change fiasco. We all see how great this mind virus is working in The Peoples Socialist Republic of California.
