Bias in Virginia Policing?

I don’t know how valid the results of this study are, but a telephone survey of 10,000 Virginians conducted by Auburne University Montgomery’s Center for Government found the following: “26% of command and line officers and 43% of citizens surveyed reported that bias-based policing was practiced in Virginia.”

The study, underwritten by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services, can be viewed here.

  1. Police officers are an unpopular segment of society…do a poll on whether trial lawyers are trustworthy and you’ll get similar negative marks.

The DCJS is a rather strange hybrid of an agency. I don’t know about their other services, but their oversight of Private Security Services, leaves a lot to be desired–it’s also a revenue raising machine.

Am I the only one that thinks there is something strange with a VA State Agency contracting with a University in Alabama to do a study about bias in VA policing?

Phil, you’re not alone. It seems like every large state contract award goes to out-of-state businesses. Maybe they have the best price/service, but it sure is disconcerting to see Virginia companies shut out.

Meanwhile, the state’s effort to get more contracts for small, minority, and women-owned (SWAM) businesses is as likely to get a contract for an out-of-state SWAM as it is a Virginia company. What good does that do for minority businesses in Virginia?
