A Better Poll Question: What Matters Most to Virginia Voters

The two most important issues — by far — influencing how Virginians intend to vote are inflation and abortion, according to Virginia Commonwealth University Wilder School of Government’s latest poll. Inflation tops the list at 31%, followed by women’s reproductive rights (23%).

A second tier of issues are immigration (12%) and gun control (7%). Taxes, schools, and crime are third-tier issues.

Interestingly, a centerpiece of the Democratic Party’s rhetorical strategy — maintaining democracy and civility — didn’t register at all. Not one of the poll’s 809 respondents listed it as a top priority.

Thirty percent of those polled identified as Democrats, 26% as Republicans, and 35% as independents. As both parties play to their electoral bases in the elections, that leaves a plurality, independent voters, up for grabs. — JAB

Dems have broadly popular (with the public) policy proposals out to address the top two issues of concern? Winning! What is the Republican economic plan? Abortion rights plan?

What is the point of even having healthcare if just anyone can get it?

Trump warns of dystopian future with โ€˜healthcare for everyoneโ€™.

    1. In 2016 he told everyone he would get "beautiful healthcare".

He also told screaming, shouting crowds in West Virginia that he would bring back coal jobs and "I love coal."

IN FACT, there were fewer coal mining jobs when he left office than when he took office.

I would have thought roads/traffic would have rated a response.

PDs understaffed. Crime at lowest. Oooooh, I love negative correlation.

    1. Gun ownership among Americans is at the highest rate in history. Low crime.

      I also love negative correlation…

Speaking of stupid moves, donโ€™t try this at home.

So, years ago the electric start on the BBQ grill died. No big deal. I just bought a long neck wind proof butane lighter. It was refillable so bought a can of butane too.

Well, no matter how long I hold that can to the lighter, itโ€™s a no-go on refilling. No biggie, the spark on the lighter does the job. Donโ€™t need a flame.

But, itโ€™s a refillable lighter damn it, and itโ€™s the only thing for which that big can of butane can be used.

This is where an education is dangerous.

Put the refill can in the 90 degree garage and tossed the lighter in the freezer. Big pressure differential! Thatโ€™ll move the butane into the lighter.

Well, thereโ€™s nothing funnier than a panicky man holding a blow torch with a 10โ€ flame that just wonโ€™t go out even when you release the trigger. Oh, and wind proof means you ainโ€™t blowing it out either.

But, now I know how butane lighters are made.

I see the Harris – Walz campaign issued their policies with regard to the economy (the number one issue in this poll).

All I can say is, "Wow".

Price caps on groceries to stop those evil corporations from raking in the big bucks. Why? Because that's what fueling inflation. Not the absurd spending of the Biden-Harris administration. Greedy corporations are the problem.

The sheer stupidity of that proposal boggles the mind.

Where are these excess grocery profits accumulating?

    Let's take bacon.

    Feed companies?
    Pig farmers?
    Meat processors (e.g., Smithfield)?
    Transport companies?
    Supermarkets?

So, the government tells Safeway they can't raise the price of bacon by more than 3% per year. Safeway is owned by Albertsons. Albertsons generates a whopping 1.9% profit margin.

Biden/Harris inflation continues and the cost of bacon to Safeway / Albertsons rises by 5% in 2025.

What does Safeway / Albertsons do?

    They stop selling bacon.

Even the Washington Post is questioning this dumb as a stump idea … https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2024/08/15/kamala-harris-price-gouging-groceries/

    But wait!

The flurry of stupid ideas from Team Harris / Walz isn't done at price caps.

There is $25,000 of downpayment assistance for first time homeowners. Brilliant! Let's help people who can't really afford a house buy one. Were these two clowns comatose in 2008?

Sometimes you have to wonder if you added up the IQs of Harris and Walz if you'd get to 175.

"Albertsons generates a whopping 1.9% profit margin."

Well, they still are paying off their $4 billion pay out to share holders from 2023… so…

The mere act of President Trump taking office again will solve 99% of the Nation's problems, since Joe and Kamala are the source of that 99%,
