Meanwhile, the Homicide Rate Keeps Climbing

From January to June this year, the seven largest localities of Hampton Roads have seen 115 homicides — up from 88 the same time last year, a 30% increase. Newport News and Hampton experienced a dip, but homicides have surged in Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Virginia Beach and Suffolk, reports The Virginian-Pilot.

Donโ€™t move to Baltimore to escape increasing murder rates. Up here we just experienced the worst murder rate in city historyโ€ฆ..and thatโ€™s saying something. 179 homicides through June 30, and the news is filled daily with murders adding to that total.

Iโ€™m humming โ€œTake me back to old Virginnyโ€ dailyโ€ฆ..but only in a non-urban setting. Our cities need new leadership and prosecuting attorneys immediately.

    1. And BLM did what to stop black killings during the ‘Summer of Love’……?

        Nothing.

  2. I’ve got a nit to pick. The chart shows numbers of homicides within the cities, not the cities’ homicide rates.

For instance, the population of Virginia Beach is 80% higher than the next largest city on the list. So, even with a most-regrettable doubling of the number of homicides in Virginia Beach within the time frames compared, the city’s 2022 (Jan-Jun) homicide rate is the lowest among the seven cities.
