Richmond (Va.) Mayor Doug Wilder, who envisioned the creation of a slavery museum in the U.S. during a 1992 trip to Africa, holds a metal mask used to punish slaves. The former Virginia governor first studied slavery’s legacy while taking a high school class in 1944 called “The Story of the Negro Retold.” Says Wilder: “We were at the height of the war in Europe and a segregated society here. And my mind is bursting to learn all I can about what I can. I wanted to know when and how and why it started, and, more important, when is it going to end?”
