Connaughton Campaign Responds to

"The Politics of Lies"

Phillip Rodokanakis’ “The Politics of Lies,” posted March 28 on Bacon’s Rebellion, is mind-boggling in its deceitful mudslinging and campaign chicanery, especially since it comes from someone claiming certification as a fraud investigator.

The “half-truths, falsehoods and outright lies” Mr. Rodokanakis lays to Sean Connaughton – chairman-at large of the Prince William Board of County Supervisors running for the Republican nomination for Virginia lieutenant governor in the June 14 primary – actually better describe his own article.

Tellingly, Mr. Rodokanakis’ screed includes false allegations against Sean Connaughton almost identical to those made by his opponent, state Sen. Bill Bolling, in a campaign flier mailed to Virginia voters in December.

The truth is obvious: Mr. Rodokanakis is simply being used by the Bolling campaign as its attack dog.

But even more telling, Mr. Rodokanakis does not dispute the truth about Bill Bolling’s tax and spend record. Why? Because every comparison in the Connaughton mailer is true.

  • Bill Bolling actually did double the taxes on family telephone, electricity and natural gas bills (April 1994, Hanover County Board of Supervisors).

  • Bolling actually did vote for a budget plan calling for a 13 cent increase in the real estate tax rate. (June 1995, Hanover Board).

  • Bolling’s votes, added up, led to a stunning 66 percent increase in average real estate tax bills in Hanover County.

  • From 1996 to the present, state Sen. Bolling voted for every state budget but one, and Bolling voted to spend the state surplus created by the massive tax increase of 2004. The result: during Bolling’s years in the State Senate, spending has exploded by almost 80 percent.

No wonder Bill Bolling is using attack dogs to spread falsehoods about Sean Connaughton. He clearly cannot defend his own tax-and-spend record.

However, backing up Sean’s Connaughton’s proven record on lowering tax rates and keeping spending in line is easy.

Sean is the only candidate who has actually capped real estate taxes. His county board set a policy that limits the potential growth in the average real estate tax bills, regardless of the rise in the average assessments. This policy will prevent the average tax bills from rising above 5.9 percent. Now, Sean looks forward to working with Jerry Kilgore to do the same for all Virginians.

Sean has cut real estate tax rates six times in six years – that’s 45 cents, making it one of the largest tax rate reductions in the nation. Prince William homeowners pay the lowest real estate taxes in all of Northern Virginia despite the rapid growth and the 25,000 new homes built in the county since 2000 that have dramatically raised the price of the average home in the county, and thus the average taxes paid.

Under Sean’s leadership, Prince William leads the entire nation in job creation (Bureau of Labor Statistics). And, Prince William has achieved and maintained the coveted AAA Bond Rating because of the county’s efficient budget and focus on key priorities like public safety, roads and education.

This record is the reason Sean was re-elected in Virginia’s second largest county with 70 percent of the vote in 2003.

Republican primary voters have a crystal clear choice on June 14:

Bill Bolling’s tough talk but tax-and-spend record, or;

Sean Connaughton’s proven conservative record of lowering tax rates and reining in big government.
