There
are many types of blogs, which are published for a
wide variety of reasons. We do not pretend to
speak for all of them. Our goal is to elevate the
Bacon's Rebellion blog into a medium capable of
winning widespread credibility as a source of news
and commentary. After considerable debate
and reflection, we have adopted the following
editorial policies for Bacon's Rebellion. We
invite other bloggers to borrow freely.
1. Contributors blog under
their legal names to report news or comment upon it.
The news and opinions they offer are their own, derived
from their own reporting, reading, research, and
personal experiences. They do not seek nor will
they
accept any payment for expressing opinions without
advance notification to the readers. Occasionally,
they will post satirical material, but this material will
be easily identifiable.
2. Contributors always
will credit the work of others and provide links to
that work wherever possible.
3. Contributors will not
knowingly publish information that is false or
incorrect. Should they publish anything shown to be
false or incorrect, they will post a correction and,
if appropriate, an apology. The correction will be
as visible as the original inaccurate statement.
4. Contributors will avoid unfair characterizations
of the news and opinions published by others.
5. If
contributors perform
the work of a newsgathering journalist in the
course of their blogging, they will follow generally
accepted codes of journalistic conduct, in
particular in the realm of libel and the quotation of
anonymous sources.
6. The publisher will not
censor or edit the content posted by contributors
or readers except in cases of foul or inflammatory
language, mean-spirited personal attacks or libel. However,
the publisher reserves the right to restrict
discussion of any topic that veers too widely from
the focus of the blog as a forum for discussion of
Virginia state and local politics and public
policy. The publisher pledges to be accessible to readers and to respond to
their complaints and suggestions.
Note:
A "contributor" is defined as a person
given administrative rights to post content on the home page
of the blog, as opposed to general readers who can
only comment upon the content posted by
contributors. Although we encourage readers to
blog under their legal names, we do not require
them to do so.
