Virginia, the Home of My Heart

Controversy is heating up again over designation of an official state song, an honor that has been left in limbo since the dethroning of “Carry Me Back to Old Virginny” for its racist lyrics. Speaker of the House William J. Howell, R-Stafford, has introduced a bill to make “Our Great Virginia,” sung to the tune of “Shenandoah,” the new aria of the commonwealth. But Del. John O’Bannon, R-Henrico, told the Richmond Times-Dispatch that he would file a bill to recognize “Virginia, the Home of My Heart” written by Henrico resident Susan Greenbaum.

I’m biased: Susan is a friend of mine. But I think the melody is lovely and the words entirely suitable for a state song. (They’re so suitable that one might think she wrote it with the thought of nominating it as such, but she actually wrote it for her husband). Listen to the Youtube version of the song, like it, pass it around and run up the numbers to show your support.

  1. Remember at all the “controversy” and anger that erupted over Carry Me Back to Old Virginny.

“There’s where this old darkey’s heart am long’d to go,
There’s where I labored so hard for old massa,
Day after day in the field of yellow corn,
No place on earth do I love more sincerely
Than old Virginia, the state where I was born.”
    – Written by one hell of an ignorant white person

God those black people just loved slavery didn’t they?

So much anger and political discourse… I just wonder, what do those people complain about now and days? Hmmm hmmm hmmm.

History makes jackasses of people doesnt it? I guess some people are slimey enough to change their stripes when they see the winds changing (atleast publicly)

I dont necessarily understand the “new controversy” between the two new proposed songs? Explain?

  2. BTW, if you are asking people to watch the clip you might want to link it in the story 😉

  3. @James, yes but I believe embed videos do not get the “views” that you are hoping for to go up.

  4. Please keep writing about this! I was so excited when someone posted “Virginia, the Home of My Heart” on Facebook Wednesday night. From the moment I heard it, I knew it was the PERFECT song!! (I also watched the video of the “Shenandoah” remake. It was nice of the professor to hire the man from NY to write new lyrics, but it is not what Virginia needs.)

I don’t know Ms. Greenbaum, but I feel so strongly about this being the new state song that I have started a community support group/coalition for it. Visit us at http://www.facebook.com/homeofmyheart for more info! (You can also get there via http://www.virginiastatesong.com .)

  5. Also… please email Speaker Howell at delwhowell@house.virginia.gov and your local representative as well. Let them know this is an IMPORTANT issue! Thanks…
